Does It Matter?

DOES IT MATTER?
It’s the reason why we might question attending the family gathering. Or watching the super bowl with them. Why we skipped Christmas or Thanksgiving. Everyone has an opinion. Everyone is an “expert.” Oh, just shut up already. But does it matter? No.
My opinions are mine and they do exist. And I’m sure they don’t matter to them. At the center of it all is what we think of the opinion of others. Yesterday, a cousin I have in Florida messaged me on Instagram. He and I don’t have a close relationship. Now, recently I’ve been using my social media platforms to share information. To share stories of journalists and reporters. To push back against the current political disaster we’re watching. My cousin decided to send me a LONG message with much of the same rhetoric as the child in the White House.
I read the first 3 lines, swiped right to exit the message and left it alone. I did not read the rest. I did not respond. And I don’t plan to. Because it doesn’t matter. My opinions don’t matter. His don’t matter. As a person raising a family, I have limited bandwidth and responding to someone that likely copies and pastes the same bullshit a deranged man-child posts, is not at the top of my list.
I can talk about what is right or wrong with anyone. But I will not entertain this extreme divide in politics what has led to an extreme divide in civility. Decency. A moral compass that is worn down because of the severity of evil we’ve seen as of late. I don’t have the time to message him back, the care to do so or the desire to convince him of how his views and mine clearly don’t align.
Standing up for what is right/wrong, however, does merit our intervention. Which is why the messages I share or social media are centered around that - doing the right thing. Because that matters. That is the work we are preparing for our kids. This is how we prepare them. With what we think, what we say, what we believe. How we vote and how we treat each other. What matters is that we all do the right thing. Not what is Blue or Red. Not what is left or right. Now what is Democratic or Republican.
